"Karakan" is one of the foundation Cashmere Studs of Australia.

For the past 25 years this Herd has been at the forefront of genetic progress in the breeding of superior Cashmere producing animals.

Karakan Cashmere Australia A Karakan Cashmere Buck

"Karakan" genetics have been exported around the world.

USA, France, South Africa and New Zealand.

Genetic progress in the Stud has resulted in a steadily increasing annual production of Cashmere Down on Karakan animals. As production increased "Karakans" grew less and less Guard Hair and more and more down. Superior animals emerged. Some grew fleeces of up to 90% Cashmere down. Some grew very long down (up to 150mm). Some even grew their down all year round instead of the traditional seasonal growth.

In 1997 A selection was made of the top 100 animals in the Karakan Herd. These animals became the foundation animals for two research projects ...

Project KKN which set out to develop the technology to run a self-replacing cashmere flock under fully shedded conditions.

RIRDC Project KKN-1A  A project partially funded by the Australian Government that set out to investigate the genetic basis of fleece production in Cashmere Goats.

Both projects have now been completed and the project animals are to be dispersed.
