Project KKN - breeding a new type of cashmere goat

The KARAKAN Goal:  A robust animal capable of producing in excess of 1 kg per annum of pure Cashmere Down, free of Guard Hair. The mean fibre diameter of adult does to be around 16.8 microns.

Project KKN experience suggests that such an animal will be best managed under a fully housed régime. Fibre will grow 12 months of the year. Down lengths will be well in excess of current manufacturing specifications and down will likely be harvested by shearing twice a year.

Karakan animals approaching this performance exist today. The best yields are around 90 % down and fleece weights up to around 700 gm down. The Project has reasonable expectations of achieving their goals within a few generations.
